I think it is pretty normal that the person who penned the song get the royalties on their song writing. This should be the case for every writer. There is absolutely nothing strange in that. On top, in this case the songwriter, Dolly Parton, not only herself sang and had a big hit with it once, but in fact twice before Whitney's version. I knew this as a Dolly Parton song before Whitney's version. For others it was visa versa. Remember also, Dolly Parton turned down Elvis when he wanted to record the song. His manager wanted a big share in the copyright. It broke her heart to refuse, but she couldn't give up what would be a heritage for her family and people. So there is no doubting the value of the song. Linda Rondstat was the first to cover the song. The same Dolly Parton has had her songs recorded by so many from Johnny Cash, to Sinead O Connor, Marianne Faithful, Norah Jones,Keith Urban, Emmy Lou etc. She made up to 35million from her world tour in 2011, ie 49 venues filling out O2 statium and other such venues in UK, Ireland, Australia. This at the age of 65/66. She has invested her money in Dollywood employing thousands, Imagination library for literacy of children Hospitals and many charities often not made public. She has always and ever praised Whitney for her wonderful version and for what it brought her financially. But I think one can safely say, that thousands will benefit through Dolly's charity work. So Whitney's talent is not lost, but will help many. They both have and had gifts and those gifts will live on, one way or another, forever.
